What Is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport is a mandatory digital record containing comprehensive data about a product's lifecycle, materials, and environmental impact, accessible via a QR code on the physical product.

This requirement stems from the ESPR. For a broader view, see our EU Product Compliance pillar page.

Official Reference: ESPR Article 8.

What Data Does a DPP Contain?

  • Unique product identifier
  • Material composition and sourcing
  • Carbon footprint data
  • Recycled content percentage
  • Repair and end-of-life instructions
  • Manufacturer details

What Is the QR Code Requirement?

The data carrier (usually a QR code) must be present on the physical product or its packaging. The URL must always resolve to the product's passport data.

Who Generates the DPP?

It is the manufacturer's responsibility to generate and maintain the DPP. Many companies use a third-party registry like digitalproductpassports.co.za to handle the technical infrastructure.

What Happens if My DPP URL Breaks?

If the URL fails to resolve, the product is considered non-compliant and can be seized at EU customs or withdrawn from the market.
